How to Become a Fashion Designer

It isn’t difficult to become a fashion designer. There are a variety of different paths that you can take to be successful. The most obvious course is to attend fashion design school and then start your career with an internship either during or after your education. This is the route that most people take, and it is the best way to start a career for most people.

If you have connections or happen to ‘know people’, you might be able to get in the door without education. However, to be the best that you are going to be, education is always going to be helpful. You should start looking for fashion design schools that are especially for design.

While many 4-year colleges are starting to offer this type of degree, you can generally still get a better education at a technical school that is completely focused on fashion design. Make sure that you consider this when you are choosing your educational plan. If there is something that is preventing you from attending a design school, any education is better than none so you should find the next best thing to get the training that you deserve.
Once you have your education, you will generally need to be an intern somewhere to get some experience. Internships can be paid or unpaid, and either way you will likely end up doing a lot of grunt work that has very little to do with fashion. However, it will give you the experience that you need for your resume so that you can be more successful in the future. Once you have done an internship, you can start applying for jobs or start your own business, although it is usually easier to be successful working for someone else first so that you gain valuable experience and knowledge before stepping out on your own.
All in all, becoming a fashion designer is an easy task. It takes a lot of time and there will be effort involved, but it isn’t impossible. Much like the entertainment industry, your chances of getting lucky and becoming an instant success are slim. However, if you work hard and take the time to focus on creating a great career for yourself, success will come. Always remember that your education is the key to your success in fashion design, as it is in many different careers in the world today.
